Italian Sweet Bread

4 c. all-purpose flour (sifted)

1 c. sugar

1 T. baking powder

1 T. minced dried lemon peel

3 large eggs at room temperature

1/2 c. half and half

1/2 c. olive oil

1 large egg yolk

1/4 c. sparkling sugar or turbinado sugar


  1. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
  2. Butter a 9 x 5 loaf pan and dust with flour.
  3. In a large bowl, sift the flour and baking powder together.
  4. Add the sugar and lemon peel.
  5. In another bowl, combine the eggs, oil and half and half.
  6. Pour the liquid over the dry ingredients and with a wooden spoon, mix until it starts to come together.
  7. Use your hands to finish kneading the dough into an oblong loaf.
  8. Place the dough in the prepared loaf pan.
  9. Whisk  the egg yolk, brush on the top of the loaf and generously sprinkle the sparkling sugar on top.
  10. Bake the loaf for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean.
  11. Cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes and then remove from the pan, slice and serve.
