Sweet Bars


Remember that left over streusel from last week?  Let’s make these easy bars in under an hour with it.  I had friends over for dinner tonight and had these ready to serve for dessert.  Nobody could eat just one.

I got the caramel and chocolate from King Arthur Flour and I have to say it was worth it.  This caramel has the perfect texture and flavor.  It’s really easy to work with.  Dare I say I ate almost half of this dark chocolate one piece at a time before I finally made something with it.  It’s incredibly smooth and rich.  Prefer milk chocolate?  King Arthur sells that too!

Sweet Bars

makes about 16 – 2 inch square treats


2 c. streusel

14 ounces caramel cut into 2 inch chunks

5 ounces valrhona dark chocolate pieces

1 t. Fleur de Sel


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.  Press the cold streusel into a buttered and floured 8 x 8 inch pan.

Sweet Bars Step 1

Bake for 15 minutes.  During the baking step cut up your caramel.  Remove th pan from the oven and place the caramel chunks on the hot crust.

Sweet Bars Step 2

Place the pan back in the oven, turn the oven off and let the pan sit for 5 minutes or until the caramel is melted.  Remove the pan from the oven and lay the chocolate piece on the caramel.  It melts fairly quickly.  Take a knife and smooth the chocolate together.

Sweet Bars Step 3

Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes to cool a bit and sprinkle with Fleur de Sel.  Place in the refrigerator to solidify (about 30 minutes).  Remove the pan from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before wanting to serve it and cut into squares with a sharp knife.
